| Wolgan Gap, where the road enters the Wolgan Valley (27k). |
For the first few kilometres the valley is fairly narrow and the cliffs stay
close at hand (26k).
Before long, the valley broadens out. At this point, the western cliffs form
part of the Australian 'Great Dividing Range' (22k).
Early morning winter scene as the Wolgan Valley broadens out (19k). |
| The road eventually turns east-north-east. Ahead lies Woolpack rock and the
northern wall of the valley (34k). |
For the last 8km to Newnes, the road follows the Wolgan River through the
outskirts of Wollemi National Park. Care is needed here as the road is narrow and winding.
Wombats and wallabies are additional road hazards when travelling at dusk or at night
(37k). |
