Sample Competitions Page

Deadline:  Last Friday in September

Conducted Yearly – since 1987.  Entries received from August 1.
Entries invited from All residents of Australia.
Sections Open, and Shire of Mundaring National Young Writers Awards.
Young Writers = 2 sections: 20 years and under, and 13 years and under.
Entry form No entry form required.  Conditions available from early February - send SSAE, or email kspf@iinet.net.au, or check website. Multiple entries accepted - maximum 3. Individual stories cannot be entered in more than one section.
Entry fee

Open:  $5 per story.  Payable to:  KSP  Foundation Inc.
Shire of Mundaring National Young Writers Awards:  no entry fee required.

Manuscript:  typed or computer printed, wide left hand margin, double-spaced, on  one side only of white A4 paper with pages numbered, titled, and stapled in top left corner.
No writer's name to appear on manuscript.
Handwritten, faxed, computer disk, or email entries will not be accepted.

Cover sheet
:  to state name of competition, Section entered, title of story, word count, and age of entrant if Young Writer.
Separate sheet:
  to note name and year of competition, Section entered,  title and word count of story, writer's name, age if Young Writer, address, telephone number, and email address if available.
Entries are to be forwarded in an A4 size envelope.  Include a similar-sized SSAE if manuscript return is desired.
Entries must be Original, unpublished, not previously broadcast, not a previous award winner in another competition, and not under consideration elsewhere from the time of entry in these awards until the official announcement of winners.
Word count 1000 to 3000 words – both Sections.
Range of interest Free choice of style and subject.
Common flaws encountered

Lack of final editing, polishing.  Full conditions of entry not acquired, checked and followed, i.e. no entry fee/s included with Open entries, text single-spaced, stories under or above stated word count range, no word count noted for stories, writer’s name on manuscript and/or cover sheet – writer’s name must only appear on the Separate sheet used as entry form, no Section entered noted – e.g.. Open, no age given by Young Writer entrants.

Judging finalised End of November.
Winners notified By telephone or mail.  Awards announced and presented at the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre in the afternoon of the Sunday closest to Katharine’s birthday, December 4, when those able to attend will be invited to read extracts from their Award winning stories.
Full list of winners Automatically supplied if business-size SSAE is included with entry.  Second SSAE unnecessary if large SSAE already provided for return of manuscript/s.
Judge's report Supplied to winners and all entrants who include an SSAE with entry.
Prizes Open:  First - $300;  Second - $50.
Shire of Mundaring National Young Writers Awards: 
20 and under: First - $75;  Second - $25. 13 and under: First - $25.

Plus Highly Commended and Commended certificates at judge's discretion.
Rights

Remain with writer, but Competition organisers reserve the right to publish winning entries in a publication related to the organisers if the opportunity occurs.
