The main gold bearing areas are found to the North-West of Melbourne with the fields running generally in a North to South aspect. The area bordered by Ballarat, Wedderburn and Bendigo is recognised as being the richest alluvial gold bearing area in the world and is often referred to as "The Golden Triangle". The areas listed below are where the major occurences of gold are found in Victoria.

For anyone who is visiting Victoria, and especially Wedderburn, there is a operational small scale Gold Mine that can be visited in Wedderburn. It is called the
Christmas Reef Mine and enquiries can be made by ringing the owner,
Doug McGuire on (03) 5494 3620. Doug offers 'hands on' training in underground mining and his
mine is used by the Bendigo Institute of TAFE for their small scale mining course (ASF level 3).
More specific detail regarding these areas can be obtained by using other reference sources including the relevant States Department of Mines and Energy.
